Bonnie Gail Long (Watkins) Hickman, a beacon of warmth and creativity, passed from this life to be with Jesus on March 27, 2025 surrounded by her loved ones, at the age of 85 in Canon City, Colorado. Born on June 18, 1939 in Aline, Oklahoma, Bonnie's life was a tapestry of love, family, and artistic pursuits. Bonnie's journey through life was marked by her loving relationships and strong family ties. She was predeceased by her first husband, Kenneth Max Watkins, and is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Warren Hickman. Bonnie's legacy includes her children, Monte Hickman (Kayla), Marty Hickman (Nancy), Kenny Watkins, and Kendra McFall (Dwayne McFall). Her grandchildren, Kelsey Hickman Faletra (Nick), Jordan Hickman, Adam Hickman (Lynn), Alex Hickman (Kelly), Jessica Oliveto Slattery (Chris), Eli Oliveto, Abraham Oliveto (Beci), held a special place in her heart, along with her great-grandchildren, Jayden McNatt, Jacob Oliveto-Slattery, Elise Slattery, Carter Oliveto, Levi Oliveto, Cole Hickman, Evan Hickman, Violet Hickman, Finnegan Faletra, Thea Faletra, Phoebe Hickman, and June Hickman. Bonnie also cherished her bonus grands, Melanie Merritt, Kaylah Potter (Mark), and Keelan Chattan (Robert), and her bonus great-granddaughter, Sophia Merritt. The family will forever remember her gentle spirit and thoughtful nature.
A after graduating high school, Bonnie furthered her education with a year of business college, which served her well in her professional life. She spent 20 years managing cash receipts at Farmers Insurance, where her attention to detail and warm personality made her a beloved colleague. Her contributions to the workplace were marked by the same love and dedication she gave to her family.
Bonnie's interests were as colorful and varied as the quilts she crafted with such care. An artisan at heart, she filled her home and the lives of those around her with handmade treasures. From quilting to crocheting, candle making to sewing, and everything in between, Bonnie's creative spirit was boundless. Her culinary skills were no less impressive, as she delighted family and friends with her cooking, baking, and especially her candy making. Bonnie's hands were rarely still, and the beauty she created with them brought joy to all who were lucky enough to receive her gifts. Bonnie and Warren retired early and spent many years as "snowbirds" seeing family and traveling all over the United States living in a 5th wheel camper. Family vacations are fondly remembered by her children. Humor abounds in the memories that were created by these adventures. As a blended family, Bonnie excelled at making sure each and everyone of her family knew she loved and supported them unconditionally. Described as loving, thoughtful, and gentle, Bonnie's character was the foundation upon which her vibrant life was built. She approached every challenge with grace and every celebration with enthusiasm. Her gentle guidance and unconditional love shaped the lives of her children and grandchildren, leaving a legacy of kindness and compassion. Bonnie was a survivor, she was widowed at 22 years of age, and a mother of two young children. She also beat breast cancer later in life.
As we remember Bonnie, we reflect on the words of Helen Keller: "What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Bonnie's love and the memories she created will forever remain a cherished part of the lives she touched. Bonnie's life was a testament to the beauty that can be created with love and care. As we say farewell, we celebrate the rich, full life she led and the many ways she made the world a more beautiful place. Bonnie Gail will be deeply missed, but her light will continue to shine in the hearts of those who loved her.

Verl "Dean" Frink, a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2025, in Westcliffe, Colorado, at the age of 77. Born on April 27, 1947, in Nigeria, Africa to missionary parents, Dean grew up in an environment of adventure and a dedication to service.
Dean's career spanned the breadth of the continental United States. It included honorable service in the Coast Guard, a vigilant role in security, and a commitment to protecting others as a firefighter for the Veterans Administration. Dean retired to the serene town of Westcliffe. It was his younger brother Paul who had convinced him to choose this tranquil setting for his retirement years, a decision that brought him much joy and contentment.
After moving to Westcliffe, Dean chose to deliver papers as a retirement activity and a way to get to know the people of Westcliffe better. He enjoyed the drives with the beautiful scenery and the interactions with the people on his route. Though Dean was a transplant to Westcliffe, he took special pride in identifying as a Westcliffe resident. He knew all the "happenings", celebrations, and history of Westcliffe. For many years, (and to the delight of his family in New York State,) Dean had the local newspaper, Wet Mountain Tribune, sent to them just so they could share his appreciation for "all things Westcliffe."
Dean had a particular love for reading that included everything from historical novels to textbooks. But his greatest love was people.
Dean was a friendly, cheerful soul who relished a good conversation. Dean loved to share stories with anyone he met, and he considered everyone his friend. Dean took pride in remembering special dates and events in his family and friends' lives – birthdays, anniversaries, a wedding or the birth of a child. Sharing in others' joys and sorrows truly enriched Dean's life.
Dean is survived by his brother, David Frink and his wife Debra; his sister, Marjorie Grout and her husband Richard; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dean was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Paul Frink who was a fellow resident of Westcliffe.
Dean will be laid to rest with his parents in upstate New York, where family and friends will gather to honor his life. Dean's humble, generous spirit will be remembered by all those he touched.
Susan DeSmet Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Harwood Cremation and Funeral Services - Canon City on Mar. 6, 2025
Susan DeSmet passed away on March 2, 2025 at the age of 81. Born on February 3, 1944 in Denver, Colorado, Susie was a proud Colorado native who loved the mountains, art and music, her garden and her dogs, her family and friends. She was raised by her mother, Virginia, an army nurse, and her Aunt Lillian, a homemaker. From Lillian, she learned kindness, generosity, and the art of cooking as service to friends and neighbors. From Virginia, she learned common sense, the art of card playing, the care and keeping of beautiful roses, and a great many jokes that would be inappropriate to include here.
In 1966, she earned a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In the same year, she married her first husband, Tim Keck. Their first daughter, Kristen, died at birth; they welcomed their second daughter, Krista, in 1971. While Tim was on a Fulbright Fellowship in Hamburg, Germany, Susie embraced motherhood, standing out with her two long, red braids and a baby in a sling on her back. Not long after their return to the US, she and Tim divorced.
In Denver, Susie soon met her second husband and companion of the last 48 years, Donald DeSmet, and she became a loving stepmother to three sons, Craig, Dale, and Bryan. She and Don enjoyed traveling, from Glacier Park to Mexico City, San Francisco to Niagara Falls. Susie traveled with Krista to Chaco Canyon, instilling in her a love of the expansiveness of the American West and the history of its people. They visited her brother, Paul, and his wife, Linda, in Moab, Utah, where she climbed slick-rock trails, rafted down the Colorado River, and delighted in spotting bighorn sheep along the river. They often visited Don's family at his mother's home in Larchwood, Iowa.
Susie taught middle school art and language arts for thirty years, making her, as she liked to say, both "a saint and a glutton for punishment." In 1983, while teaching, she earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Denver. As retirement approached, she earned certification in paleontology from the Denver Museum of Natural History. After moving to Canon City, she volunteered at the Dinosaur Depot museum and enjoyed sharing her love of all things dinosaur with grandchildren Dani, Aidan, and Dana Mays, and Ticia DeSmet. She found a renewed interest in pottery, and she explored local and natural pottery techniques, harvesting the clay from the earth, crafting and firing it in the old way. From symbols to stories, she took great care to honor the artistic traditions of native peoples in her storyteller dolls and in her pottery. Susie enjoyed accompanying Don to car club gatherings and car shows. There and elsewhere in Canon, they met the many dear friends and neighbors who now surround Don with the loving care that she gave him those many years.
She is survived by her husband, Donald DeSmet, her brother, Paul Seibert, her daughter, Krista Mays (Dan), stepsons Craig DeSmet, Dale DeSmet (Jacqui), and Bryan DeSmet (Judy), four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A celebration of Susie's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her honor to the New Horizons Ministries.
Her laughter and her loveliness will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her. She asked that we remember her in the yellow flashes of birds in flight.

Beth was a helper and a caretaker. Anyone who knew her would agree that these traits were essential to her nature. She was a learner. Her curiosity about the world and the people and things in it never left her. She was a musician. She played the bass, piano, and guitar, and was a soulful singer.
Beth was a world-class listener, which – throughout her life – brought immeasurable comfort to her friends, family, and more than a few total strangers.
Beth was an authentic person. She was unusually free from vanity. Beth saw the good in everyone. She lived her values by treating everyone the way she wanted to be treated. She was immensely generous with her time, her money, her attention, and her love. She was kind.
Beth was a spiritual person. She worked hard to cultivate a healthy mind and a contented soul. She lived in gratitude until the very end.
Beth was an engaged citizen. She was a proud Democrat. She was a feminist. She was an advocate for the marginalized and cared deeply about equality and lifting up those with the least.
She loved to read, and she loved music. She loved food of all kinds, especially sharing food with others. She loved watching football. She loved to travel. She loved to play games. She loved camping and the outdoors, especially the mountains.
In February 2023, Beth was diagnosed with myxofibrosarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft-tissue cancer. She endured multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiation at UCHealth Anschutz Cancer Center. It gave her an additional two years of life, during which she created many happy memories with family and friends. In October 2024, she decided to forgo further treatments when they were no longer effective against the spreading cancer. She died on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at her Westcliffe, CO, home with husband Dan holding her hand. She was 68 years old, far too young to leave us. The world is a better place because she was here. She will be profoundly missed.
Her memorial service will take place on June 30, 2025, in Westcliffe. Details will be forthcoming later. In lieu of flowers, please donate to one of the following organizations in Beth's name:
Sarcoma Foundation of America - https://curesarcoma.org/ways-to-help/donate/
